Founded in 1947, Field Aviation was originally located in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada - established to provide maintenance support to aircraft operators performing aerial survey and mapping operations over Canada’s vast territories. Another area of focus was converting former Canadian military aircraft into planes designed for civil roles.
Soon thereafter, in the mid 1950s, we opened facilities at the international airports in Calgary and Toronto. Our Calgary facility provided maintenance and support to the growing number of aircraft used in oil and gas explorations, while our Toronto facility specialized in taking standard transport aircraft and modifying them for special-purpose applications such as aerial photography and geophysical survey.
Expanding into Aircraft Sales
In the 1950s, Field expanded into sales, becoming the official Canadian sales representative for the Beechcraft Corporation (now Hawker Beechcraft). Since then, we've continued that concentration with the sale of numerous individual aircraft and fleets. Our customers range from private owners, flight training establishments and commercial operators and corporations, to provincial and federal government agencies including Transport Canada, The RCMP and Department of National Defense.
Each decade has brought new capabilities for Field. Throughout the 70s and 80s, we became internationally recognized as the foremost expert in reclaiming and repairing accident-damaged aircraft - performing salvage operations on every continent from Canada's high Arctic to South America and Africa. In the 90s, our innovative aeronautical engineering capabilities came to the forefront through the design and installation of fire-fighting systems for both land-based and amphibious aircraft.
Aircraft Modification Becomes Our Cornerstone
Our capabilities were soon expanded by taking our Aircraft Modification services to the next level - delivering a range of restorations, cargo conversions and interior reconfigurations, as well as major airframe inspections and complete aircraft painting.
Modifications now comprise a majority of our business, a niche that has increasingly become an imperative in our industry. By providing upgrades and conversions to all types of operators, we help them enhance their aircraft productivity, keep up with new technology and adapt to changes in the regulatory environment.
Parts Manufacturing Rounds Out Our Capabilities
Field Aviation began parts manufacturing in 1989, with a focus on supporting the out-of-production de Havilland Caribou (C4) and Buffalo (C5) aircraft. Today, we manufacture airframe parts and accessories for current-production aircraft including the Bombardier Dash 8 Q 400 and the new Viking Twin Otter 400. We also continue to support numerous out-of-production aircraft by manufacturing hard-to-find parts and specializing in one-off components. Plus, as an accredited AMO, we have the capability to repair and overhaul these components as well.
